A drop-in solution or the Google Nest Mini. Bi/ome uses agricultural waste + living microorganisms to create a durable, carbon-sequestering, and fully home-compostable external hardware.
Bi/ome
Main Components:
Biochar, PHA, Bacterial Dyes
Biodesign Challenge x Google Hardware Finalist
40 teams from 15 countries developed projects to rethink electronic hardware design and imagine a future where devices function in symbiotic harmony with the environment, increase biodiversity, and bring positive change to both people and the environment.
Positioned at the interface of private life and emerging technology, this biological material blends naturally into the home environment. Bi/ome is a circular solution that has the potential to mitigate the climate crisis through mass carbon sequestration by leveraging the power of scale and Google’s global impact. While our current proposal can be immediately implemented and doesn’t require retrofitting or new machinery, we see a future where the Nest suite could be made fully from this biocomposite.
Our Process
User-Testing
Interviewing & observing respondents as they compare the existing Google Nest materiality and our drop-in Bi/ome solution.
Our Solution
The fully biodegradable & injection-moldable external hardware is comprised of biochar (from agricultural & food waste feedstocks) & PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate bacterial polymer). The upper of our Google Nest Mini is covered by a bacterial-dyed hemp fabric.
